$38 Million Gift to TAMIU Announced by Yield Giving

Dr. Christopher Maynard

Texas A&M International University has been named a recipient of an unrestricted $38 million gift from Yield Giving, the primary philanthropic vehicle for MacKenzie Scott, philanthropist and author. It is the second largest gift in TAMIU’s now 55-year history. The first, also a gift from Scott, was for $40 million and was provided in 2020.

TAMIU president Dr. Christopher Maynard said a gift of this magnitude is a transformational catalyst with generational implications.

“This is an investment in our future. The earnings from this investment will impact the success of TAMIU students for generations to come. It is also a remarkable catalyst that allows us the privilege of working with our partners to maximize and extend their support to always secure what truly benefits our students and drives their success,” Maynard said.

He said the University will begin a deep dive into data that looks critically at gift investments to date and their impact on student success through key performance indicators including retention, student engagement, graduation rates, and job placement outcomes.

“Linking that analysis to our existing Strategic Plan, we will look at how we can balance best practices and innovation, grow and leverage new resources, and keep student success as our primary, immovable focus,” Maynard said.

He said that this analysis will begin in the New Year, and that by mid-Spring, the University will share its plans for the gifts’ utilization moving forward.

“As you can imagine, this gift and its predecessor give us a profound ability to provide transformational education to even more students in South Texas and beyond. Our mission has not changed, but with this support we will be able to move forward more ambitiously and invest in the lives of our students and the future of this region,” he concluded.

Yield Giving was established by MacKenzie Scott to better share a financial fortune created through the effort of countless people. Yield is named after a belief in adding value by giving up control. To date, the Yield network of staff and advisors has yielded over $19,250,000,000 to over 2,450 non-profit teams to use as they see fit for the benefit of others.

TAMIU is celebrating its 55th Anniversary for the dynamic and growing campus in north Laredo, which boasts over 40,000 graduates worldwide to date.

This Spring, the campus will see the opening of an expanded Western Hemispheric Trade Center and the new Clinical Health Sciences Center, representing a $71.2 million investment.

This Fall, the campus saw its highest enrollment in history with 9,141 students, including the largest freshman class on record, 1,457 students. The student body is comprised of 62% women and 38% men with 94% identifying as minority and 97% from Texas. The Fall student body included 30 U.S. States and Territories as well as students from 38 countries.

TAMIU has been ranked #2 for lowest net price in the South by Washington Monthly Magazine’s 2025 College Guide, which also ranked the University #3 among the nation’s Best, Four-year, Hispanic-serving Colleges. Nice has ranked TAMIIU #4 for Best Value in Texas while Research.com named it #4 among Most Affordable College in Texas, and WalletHub, in its 2025 College & University Ranking, said TAMIU was #8 among Texas’s Top Ten Universities.
