TAMIU Names Tyler Unsicker as Director of Athletics

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) has named Tyler Unsicker as its new Athletics Director, bringing an experienced collegiate athletics leader to oversee TAMIU’s Dustdevil Athletics program.

Unsicker has served as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics at Louisiana State University of Alexandria (LSUA) for the past five years, leading Generals Athletics to unprecedented levels of academic achievement, competitive success, fundraising growth, and operational strength.

Unsicker expressed his enthusiasm for joining and leading the Dustdevil Athletics program.

“I am incredibly honored and excited to join Texas A&M International University and become part of the Dustdevil family,” said Unsicker. “I am eager to explore the limitless potential TAMIU has to offer as we continue to push the Dustdevils to new heights and elevate the student-athlete experience. I look forward to working alongside our coaches, staff, University leadership and community partners to support our student-athletes, strengthen our programs and build a culture of excellence that unites our University and community. I am excited for what we can accomplish together and for the opportunity to help write the next chapter of Dustdevil Athletics.”

University President Dr. Christopher Maynard celebrated Unsicker’s appointment and the opportunities ahead for the Dustdevil Athletics program.

Unsicker worked closely with LSUA leadership to strengthen nearly every facet of athletic operations. Among the most significant developments was the creation of the Student-Athlete Academic Success Center, which provides dedicated resources to help student-athletes succeed in the classroom and progress toward graduation.

Under his leadership, LSUA achieved the highest cumulative GPA in school history, with student-athletes earning a 3.32 GPA during the 2025–2026 academic year. The department also received its first Barnes & Noble College Red River Athletic Conference GPA Award in 2023–24, further recognizing its student-athletes' academic success.

During Unsicker’s term, all seven LSUA athletic programs qualified for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national tournament competition. The women’s tennis program advanced to the semifinals of the 2022 NAIA National Championship, and in 2024, the men’s basketball program also reached the national quarterfinals.

Unsicker also helped eliminate approximately $1.3 million in departmental debt, while also helping double fundraising efforts through the Generals Athletic Association through the development of a robust corporate sponsorship program – efforts that led to expanded scholarship support and improved campus facilities.  

Before LSUA, Unsicker served at NCAA Division II Central Washington University (CWU) as Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs. During his time at CWU, he led a rebranding of the university’s athletics branding, contributed to its football facility renovation, created student internship opportunities, and developed marketing initiatives.

Unsicker earned a Master of Science in Sport Administration from the University of Northern Colorado and a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Management from Brigham Young University.

Home to 13 distinct teams, Dustdevil Athletics offers men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, golf, and soccer, along with baseball, softball, volleyball, cheer, and dance.

Dustdevil Athletics also continues to build excitement as student-athletes compete at the NCAA Division II level in the highly competitive Lone Star Conference, inspiring school pride and bringing the campus community together.
