In recognition of national Hunger Action Month, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students and staff members came together for a day of service at the South Texas Food Bank (STFB), supporting the organization’s ongoing efforts to provide nutritious food to individuals and families throughout the community.

Over 50 TAMIU volunteers, that included student-athletes from men’s basketball and soccer teams, as well as University Greek life students, spent the day at STFB, assisting with essential food distribution and preparation. Volunteers sorted, organized, and packaged more than 400 prepared bags for distribution to support the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, which helps senior citizens.

By partnering with organizations such as the South Texas Food Bank, University students use their time and talents to make a meaningful difference in the communities they serve, explained Melissa Olivarez, University Office of Student Affairs program specialist II

“The volunteer effort provided TAMIU students with an opportunity to give back to the Laredo community while gaining a firsthand understanding of the important work carried out by the STFB to address food insecurity across South Texas,” said Olivarez.

With a mission to develop future leaders who are resilient, ethical, and deeply involved in their communities, the Office of Student Affairs focuses on empowering students to tackle challenges confidently, make significant societal contributions, and flourish in a constantly changing world by offering outstanding support services and fostering a solid base in values and leadership.
