Campus Safety and Security Committee

The Campus Safety and Security Committee is charged with helping ensure institutional compliance with the many federal and state laws impacting institutions of higher education, most notable of these laws are the Clery Act, Title IX/VAWA, and TAMIU's Campus Carry Rules. Additionally, as part of TAMIU's commitment to building a "culture of compliance," the committee also provides guidance regarding daily and emergency operations for the campus. The committee draws its membership from across the University to ensure that all members of the community have representation.

Led by the Senior Director for Campus Safety and Planning, this multidisciplinary team is appointed by the president and is responsible for reviewing the campus policies, procedures, and compliance efforts. Members of this committee also serve in leadership roles on other Campus Safety and Planning sub-committees.

Crime Prevention and Risk Reduction

TAMIU offers many programs designed to inform students and employees about campus security procedures and risk reduction practices. A common theme of all awareness and crime prevention programs is to encourage students and employees to be responsible for their own safety and for the safety of others on campus. Primary and ongoing prevention programs on personal safety and security are sponsored by various campus organizations throughout the year.

UPD, Division of Student Success, Institutional Compliance (Title IX), Environmental Health and Safety, and Housing and Residence Life staff, participate in programs campus-wide to explain University security, public safety, and fire safety measures and procedures at TAMIU with all incoming students and employees during orientation. Throughout the academic year, these departments conduct programs on information regarding alcohol education, fire safety, personal safety, and crime prevention for the TAMIU community.

Sexual and Gender Based Prohibited Conduct

It is a priority of TAMIU to provide an academic and work environment free from sexual harassment. The University prohibits sexual and gender based harassment and interpersonal violence on its campuses and other property, as well as in connection with its programs and activities. The A&M System and the University’s Civil Rights compliance Regulation and Rule prohibit sexual and gender-based harassment, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, intimate partner violence, stalking, retaliation, and complicity (collectively, “Prohibited Conduct”).

The Clery Act

Enacted in 1990, The Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act was designed to assist students in making decisions which affect their personal safety and to ensure institutions of higher education provide current and prospective students, and employees, staff, and faculty with information they need to avoid becoming victims of campus crime. The Higher Education Act of 1998 and the subsequent amendments of the implementing regulations (34 C.F.R.668.46) significantly expanded institutions' obligations under the Act. The Act was also renamed the "Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act" (Clery Act).

Notification to Victims of Crimes of Violence (HEOA)

The University will, upon written request, disclose to the alleged victim of a crime of violence, or a non-forcible sex offense, the report on the results of any disciplinary proceeding conducted by such institution against a student who is the alleged perpetrator of such crime or offense. If the alleged victim is deceased as the result of such crime or offense, the next of kin of such victim shall be treated as the alleged victim.

Emergency Management Plan and Response

There are times when the Chief of Police or a designee may declare a campus emergency that dictates the immediate implementation of emergency procedures, including the emergency evacuations of buildings, a part of campus, or the entire campus.

TAMIU has a comprehensive written Emergency Management Plan and Standard Operating Procedures in place. The Plan is administered by the Emergency Management Team, which draws its membership from the University division, department, and office levels. Divisions, departments, and offices should familiarize themselves with the information in this plan.
