The TAMIU ADVISE project is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) grant, awarded by the US Department of Education that includes funding for a period of five years. Over the five years, the program aims to prepare qualified, State-certified general science teachers who will be employed primarily at Laredo and United Independent School Districts.

The goal of this program is to expand educational opportunities by increasing the number of science teachers committed to teaching high-need schools in both rural and urban school districts in the Laredo or South Texas area. The TAMIU ADVISE Program will produce highly qualified general science teachers, who are not only better prepared to enter the teaching profession, but also have the resources, tools and support to remain in the teaching profession. Students will pursue the general science with 7-12 certification degree, and participate in the supplemental components:

  1. Outreach and Advising Web
  2. Summer Science Boot Camp
  3. General Science Education Internship Program
  4. Building Science Teacher Professional Networks
  5. Weekend Exemplary Teacher Preparation Workshops
  6. Summer Education PPR Boot Camp
  7. Development of Cultural Competency Components
