Become a Tutor

LP Tutors

Both Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) and Laredo College contribute Federal Community Work-Study funding to employ tutors through the Partnership. In addition, grant funds generously provided by the Lamar Bruni Vergara Charitable Trust support several part-time tutor positions.

The Partnership also hosts service-learning tutors from TAMIU Multidisciplinary Studies Program, and field experience tutors from the College of Education.

Finally, community members are welcome to volunteer as tutors, committing to a minimum of 10 weeks of service.

How do I become a tutor?

Tutor Recruitment begins soon! We hire tutors at the beginning and end of each academic semester. To stay informed, check the following sites for latest announcements and current Literacy Partnership tutor job opportunities.

All tutors must pass background checks to establish eligibility with either Laredo ISD (LISD) or United ISD (UISD). Since tutors work directly with students, they must also provide proof of a recent TB test.

What will I do for 30 minutes with my student?

The 30-minute tutoring session will go by quickly. After completing training, you will know the four key steps to follow with each student and apply flexibility to adapt lessons to your student’s interests and needs. You'll always have access to the right materials ans resources, so you'll never have to struggle to fill the time.

A typical session includes:

  1. Fluency Practice- Begin with a fast-paced sight word activity and rereading of a familiar book.
  2. Book Introduction- Preview and introduce the day’s new book at an appropriate difficulty level.
  3. Word work & Writing- Engage your student in literacy skill-building through word activities and writing.
  4. Comprehension Check- Revisit the story and guide your student in retelling what they read to reinforce understanding.

Do I have to be a future teacher to be a tutor?

Certainly not! Our tutors come from a variety of academic and career paths. Whether or not you plan to work in education, this experience will strengthen your professional and interpersonal skills.

To be an effective tutor, you simply need to:

  • Be an impeccable role model
  • Commit to tutoring for a least one semester

The tutoring process is very straightforward, and we provide training, materials, resources and ongoing support to make you a successful tutor.
