Coronavirus (COVID-19) Hours, Services, and Access

The following reflects information about physical access to the library and our services for the Fall Semester, and subject to change, until further notice. 

Hours

Effective Monday, August 24, 2020 until further notice

  • Monday to Thursday: 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
  • Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: CLOSED
  • Sunday: 12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. 

Building Access

  • Physical access to the library will be limited to the 1 st floor, 2 nd floor labs, and the Great Room on the 3 rd floor. All other library services will be available virtually and online.
  • Study room access will not be available.

Computer Labs & Printing

  • Computers and printers in the library will be accessible on the 1 st and 2 nd floors.

Borrowing

  • In order to protect both patrons and library staff, we are discontinuing self-service and browsing of library materials. If you need an item from the General Collection search the library catalog and click the 'Borrow' button in the item record.  borrow-item 
    • Once the request is received the library will look to provide a digital version of the resource with simultaneous user access, if available. If only a physical copy exists, the item will be pulled for you.
    • If a digital version is available, you will be notified when and how the resource is accessible.
    • If the physical copy is the only available copy, you will be notified when it is ready for pick up at the Circulation Desk. Items will be held for 3 business days from notification of availability.
    • Please allow 2-4 business days for your request to be processed and completed.
  • You can continue to virtually browse materials available in Killam Library by utilizing the “Browse the Shelf” feature in WorldCat Discovery .

  • In order to pick up physical items, please visit the Circulation Desk on the first floor (with your mask on, as required), during posted hours. CDC guidelines for social distancing will be observed.
  • If the items are not picked up within 3 business days they will be returned to the shelf.
  • There is a 5-item limit, per person, at this time.
  • Please return your items to the outside book drop located at the east end of the building, closest to Bullock Hall.

Interlibrary Loan Requests

  • Interlibrary loan (ILL) requests can still be made at this time; however, we make no guarantee that requests for physical items will be fulfilled due to library closures at other institutions around the country. If we are able to obtain your request, you will be notified when it is available for pickup. Electronic requests for articles and book chapters can still be made, and fulfilled. If you have additional questions please contact Malynda Dalton, Access Services Librarian, by e-mail at  mdalton@tamiu.edu  

Reserves

  • The library encourages faculty to provide course reserve materials that allow students to access the content electronically.  For assistance with this contact  librarycirculation@tamiu.edu .
  • The library is scanning specific chapters of reserve items by request, but copyright restrictions apply.
  • To request specific chapters, please email  librarycirculation@tamiu.edu , with the title of the book, the name of professor, and the course number. 

Due Dates, Fines, and Library Holds

  • Items checked out on or after August 24, 2020, will be due December 16, 2020. If you receive a system notification for library items, please contact the Circulation Desk at (956) 326-2112 or email  librarycirculation@tamiu.edu. Circulation staff will be available to assist you.
  • At this time, the library is not charging late fines accrued after March 8, 2020. Any overdue fines billed on these items will be waived.
  • The library is not handling cash or checks at this time.
  • If you have an administrative library hold on UConnect, please contact the Circulation Desk. Circulation staff is on hand to assist you.
  • Due dates for interlibrary loan items can be extended. Please contact the Interlibrary Loan Office at (956) 326-2078 or  ill@tamiu.edu, if you have questions or are receiving system notifications for borrowed items.

Research and Information Help

  • In person services at the Reference Desk will be available from 11:00am to 6:00pm Monday through Thursday and 11:00am to 4:00pm on Friday.
  • Reference services are also available online via  chat, e-mail  researchhelp@tamiu.edu,  or by calling (956)326-2138.

Library Instruction

  • Library Instruction for Fall 2020 will be virtual only. We are able to offer synchronous (librarian-led WebEx workshops) and asynchronous (video tutorials, Research Guides, handouts) learning.

Database Access

  • Access to Killam Library’s 240+ databases will continue to be available to both on and off campus TAMIU users.
  • If you have issues accessing databases, or ebooks, please contact Rogelio Hinojosa, Acquisitions Librarian, by email  rhinojosa@tamiu.eduor call (956)326-2123.

Special Collections and Archives (SPARC)

  • The Special Collections Reading Room is open by APPOINTMENT ONLY.

Unavailable Services

  • The library will not be selling any supplies.
  • Headphones will not be available for checkout.
  • The library will not be accepting book donations.
