As emerging technologies increasingly occupy center stage in trade and commerce, cybersecurity and the potential for loss of profit due to fraud are concerns business leaders are often confronted with in today’s economy.

In order to provide the latest information on the state of cybersecurity in small business to the Laredo and South Texas community, Texas A&M International University’s Small Business Development Center (TAMIU SBDC), in partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, will present an information session titled, “Payments Fraud and Cybersecurity” Thursday, Aug. 8, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. in TAMIU’s Senator Judith Zaffirini Student Success Center, room 101.

Matt Davies, assistant vice president for the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, will discuss various cybersecurity topics including current trends in fraud, check fraud, ACH fraud, and corporate account takeover. Other topics include business e-mail compromise, Ransomware and preventative measures including FBI cybersecurity best practices, said Michael González, SBDC director.

Registration is $25 and seating is limited.

“This information session is open to current business owners and those interested in starting a business as well as to anyone in the public who is interested in the topic,” González said.

González said this is the first time that the TAMIU SBDC has partnered with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas to provide an information session of this kind.

“Those who attend will receive the latest information pertaining to cybersecurity and payments fraud,” he said, “Some of the most important information, however that attendees will receive, however, is how to best work with their banking institutions in order to protect themselves, including FBI best practices in cybersecurity,” he said.

Once the presentation is complete, there will be a question and answer session so that participants can ask information specific to their needs, González said.
