U.S. News and World Report’s 2020 Edition of its popular Best Colleges guide ranks Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) as the second highest-ranked Texas public university in its Best Regional Universities West category and the highest-ranked regional campus of the Texas A&M University System.

Of 82 institutions surveyed for the ranking, TAMIU was ranked second to the University of Houston’s Clear Lake campus.

TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz said the good news of the U.S. News and World Report ranking is especially heartwarming in these challenging times.

“With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this has been a Spring of tremendous challenge for all university campuses, and TAMIU is no exception.  To know that our University continues to earn national accolades and deliver its higher education mission with commitment, excellence and innovation is something that warms our hearts and reminds us all of the value of our proudly shared mission.  As we ready for summer and Fall semesters, this powerful national affirmation will encourage students and their parents to continue their higher education pursuits here,” Dr. Arenaz observed.

The U.S. News and World Report also ranked TAMIU 14th among Top Performers on Social Mobility among Regional Universities West.  The  ranking recognizes colleges and schools that perform best at advancing social mobility by enrolling and graduating large proportions of financially disadvantaged students.

Dr. Arenaz said the University’s continued high ranking for the social mobility of its graduates remains  a source of tremendous pride for University students, faculty, staff and alumni.

“The ability of our graduates to move themselves through higher education here to measurable and substantial income and quality of life enhancements fills us all with great pride.  It assures us that with higher education here everyone has a chance to vastly better their lives here  and beyond,” Arenaz said.

Additional U.S. News and World Report rankings in the 2020 Best Colleges edition place  TAMIU 23rd among Top Public Schools, Regional Universities West.  The ranking defines public schools as those operating under the supervision of state governments and funded, in part, by tax dollars and State  subsidies.

In its profile of TAMIU, “Best Colleges 2020” further notes the University’s impressive average first year retention rate of 77% and the student-faculty ratio of 22:1. It observes that  53% of TAMIU’s freshman class are in the top 25% of their high school. The University’s acceptance rate is 53% of all applicants. That ranking is based on rigorous analysis of academic, admissions, financial, and student life data from the U.S. Department of Education along with millions of reviews from students and alumni, the site states. It compares over 500 public colleges and state universities.
