TAMIU CSDO Students Attend Virtual Film Screening

CSDO Screening

In an effort to learn more about communication disorders from a multidisciplinary perspective, several Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSDO) students attended a special virtual screening of the film, “My Beautiful Stutter.”

The socially-distanced, in-person screening included a Q&A session with the film’s producer after the viewing.

TAMIU CSDO program students are currently learning about disorders of fluency and were able to relate to the personal stories shared throughout the film from a clinical perspective, explained Dr. Melissa García, CSDO clinical assistant professional.

The screening was organized by García and Rosa Robeldo, CSDO clinical assistant professional.

As Oct. 22 marked International Stuttering Awareness Day, raising public awareness of stuttering, which affects one percent of the world’s population is important, noted García.

The film, “My Beautiful Stutter,” follows five children between the ages of nine to 18 who stutter. After experiencing several instances of bullying and stigmatization, the children ultimately meet others who stutter at an interactive arts-based program, The Stutter Association for the Young. The film documents each child’s journey to the program and shares their transformative stories.

Recently, “My Beautiful Stutter” has garnered several national and international awards, including the Best Documentary Award at the 2019 Boston International Kids Film Festival.
