First Gen Week Celebrated Nov. 7 – 10 at TAMIU

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) celebrated and recognized First Gen students as part of a dedicated week-long series of events, Monday, Nov. 7 – Thursday, Nov. 10.

Organized through the Office of Student Orientation, Leadership and Engagement, first-generation (First Gen) students are defined as individuals with parents who have not earned a four-year degree.

First Gen Week included a series of activities open to the TAMIU community, with events aimed at supporting first-gen students with the academic and professional services needed to succeed.

Scheduled First Gen Week activities included:

Monday, Nov. 7 – First Gen giveaway with CAB, 10:30 a.m. – noon at the Breezeway; an Elevator Pitch Workshop, 1 – 2 p.m. at Student Center 225; and a Cording Ceremony for First Gen students, 6 – 9:30 p.m. at the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Tuesday, Nov. 8 – Resource Fair, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Student Center Rotunda; Student/Faculty Mixer, 3 – 5 p.m. at the Student Center Rotunda; and First Gen Rocks painting activity, 5 – 7 p.m. at the Student Center Patio.

Wednesday, Nov. 9 – Coffeehouse Wednesday featuring Alan González, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. at Student Center 114 and a Student Organization Fair, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Student Center Rotunda.

Thursday, Nov. 10 – LinkedIn Workshop, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. at the Western Hemispheric Trade Center 104; First Gen Tote Bag DIY, 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the Student Center Patio; and Buenas! I am First Gen!, 7:30 – 9 p.m. at the Academic Innovation Center 126.
