A recent ranking by Degree Choices, a team of education researchers that provides advice to guide prospective students, has identified Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) as a ranking force to be reckoned with.

According to the group, TAMIU ranked number two among the Best Colleges in Texas, outranking the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, UT-Austin,Texas Women’s University, Texas A&M University, University of Houston, Texas Tech, and UT-San Antonio. The study included 299 colleges and universities.

Among Southern Colleges, Degree Choices ranked TAMIU 5th among 550 ranked institutions.

Among national Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), TAMIU was ranked 10th nationally, and the highest-ranked Texas university. In this ranking, TAMIU topped San Jose State University, and California State University’s Stanislaus and Northridge campuses. Other Texas institutions ranked were UT-Austin (No. 25), Texas Women’s University (32) Texas A&M University (37).

Overall, Degree Choices analyzed 2,203 4-year colleges and universities using data from two Department of Education programs – the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and College Scorecard.  The Degree Choices ranking is focused on median economic output, or which schools offer students a better chance of higher economic success.

TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz said rankings like those by Degree Choices affirm the University’s mission and purpose.

“Rankings like this affirm our mission, purpose, and commitment to being accessible, affordable, and exceptional.  As we ready for the start of our summer sessions and fall semester I urge parents to consider rankings like this as they ponder possibilities…and come out and visit TAMIU too,” he encouraged.

Standout statistics which helped fuel TAMIU’s high rankings included a one-year payback for tuition costs; a low net cost of $3,908; earnings calculated at $46,823, and an overall economic score of 1.01. The economic score is the combination of payback and earningsplus, and determines the university’s rank. The lower the economic score, the better.

Earlier this week, TAMIU also ranked prominently in a New York Times opinion piece that included a “Build Your Own Rankings” Tool.   Tool users will find that TAMIU consistently ranks nationally in the top five.
