Consulate General of México and IME BECAS Scholarships Support TAMIU Students

Some 36 Texas A&M International University students are getting some special scholarship help from home this Fall.

For the 10th year in a row, the Consulate General of México and Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) have  renewed their continued scholarship support of the Institute of Mexicans in the Exterior (IME) Becas Program at TAMIU.

This year, TAMIU received a total of $7,500 in scholarship funds from the IME Beca Program which will be matched by TAMIU. Additional funding includes: $5,000 from Ermilo Richer, CEO of Richer Agencia Aduanal, and $10,000 from Uni-Trade Forwarding through the Mexican Cultural Institute. 

The Consul General of México in Laredo Juan Carlos Mendoza Sánchez and TAMIU President Dr. Pablo Arenaz signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library Colonnade on Monday, July 10, 2023 at 2 p.m. reaffirming their shared commitment to the IME-BECAS Program. Also present were Miguel Conchas, President of the Mexican Cultural Institute of Laredo, and Eduardo A. Garza Robles, Board President of Uni-Trade Group.

TAMIU 2023 IME-BECAS Scholarship recipients include: Luis Alvarez Almanza, Daniela Mussot Angulo, Emiliano Fiscal Camacho, Ruth Cobos, Cristian Cordova, Emmanuel Reyes Corona, Leticia García Diaz, Gabriela Hernández Espinoza, Giselle Fernández, Enrique Fiscal, José García, María Morales García, Roberto Melendez Y García, and Edith Garza Garza.

Also, Guillermo González, Dora Guerrero, Orfalinda Gutiérrez, Ingrid Herrera, Valeria Floriano Ibarra, Vanessa Kennion, Anai del Socorro Fernández Lopez, Dither Aguilera Patiño, Daniela Aguilera Patiño, Eduardo Nafarrate González Quijano, José Ramírez, Cintya Medina Rangel, Ximena Ríos, Luis Rodríguez, and Salma Pelayo Ruiz.

In addition, Ashley Ramírez Sánchez, Heriberto Sastre, Carlos Sosa, Jennifer García Tellez, Melanie Mora Treviño, Daniela Vigil and Dulce Ponce Zamora.

The students were joined by family and friends at Monday’s ceremony.

Since 2013, the IME-BECAS Program has awarded a total of $236,940 in scholarship funds between the Consulate, community partners, and TAMIU's matching funds. The Program supports Mexican students residing abroad in the United States by providing them with additional educational resources.

By providing educational resources through the Program, the Government of México prioritizes its Mexican population living abroad in the United States. The Program recognizes the importance of Mexicans working or studying in the United States and participating in educational programs that contribute to their advancement and development.

Each year, the scholarship is made available to currently enrolled TAMIU undergraduate and graduate student. Applicants must submit proof of Mexican citizenship, be enrolled full-time, and maintain an overall GPA of 2.75 or greater. Incoming freshman students must submit a high school GPA of 3.0 or greater.
