IME BECAS Program Continues at TAMIU, Awards 22 Scholarships to Students
For the thirteenth year in a row, the Consulate General of México and Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) have reaffirmed their continued support for the Institute of Mexicans in the Exterior (IME) BECAS Program at TAMIU.
Consul General of México in Laredo Juan Carlos Mendoza Sánchez and University President Dr. Christopher Maynard, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the institutions Monday, Aug. 3 at the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library Colonnade.
This year, a total of $19,000 in scholarship funds were collected for the IME BECAS Program, with additional contributions from GEMCO and the Mexican Cultural Institute.
These funds will be matched by the University and total to $38,000.
Additional funding also includes a contribution from Ermilo Richer of Richer Agencia Aduanal.
Funding will support 22 University students who will receive scholarships this Fall 2026.
Scholarship recipients include Betzy Álvarez, Eduardo Arroyo, Pamela Castañeda Escamilla, Alondra Cuello, Alexa De León Treviño, Kaley Dunivant, Alexis Escamilla, Jose García, Karol González Martínez, Laisha González, Ximena González Martínez, Ellie Guerra, Pamela Guerra Jiménez, Cynthia Hernández Machado, Rogelio Leyendecker, Diego Montoya Ramírez, America Ordaz Loredo, José Ramírez, Raven Saladino, Alberto Vargas, Alejandro Velázquez and Alfredo Zaldivar.
The students were joined by family and friends at the ceremony.
Established in 2013, the IME-BECAS Program has now awarded a total of $295,690 in scholarship funds between the Consulate, community partners, and the University’s matching funds. The Program supports students from the border area on both sides of the Rio Grande by providing them with additional educational resources.
Each year, the IME-BECAS Program scholarship is made available full-time undergraduate or graduate students with a 2.5 GPA or higher residing in any of the following Texas counties: Dimmit, Webb, Zapata, La Salle; and Jim Hogg or that have a permanent residence in the Mexican states of Nuevo León or Tamaulipas.
