Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students have voted to support a Referendum to help maintain and enhance high-quality health services for TAMIU students, with a majority of 56.3% of students supporting the measure.

TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz praised the students’ actions and shared next steps.

“TAMIU students understand the importance of mental health and took this referendum seriously.  Engaged students are informed students and we appreciate their support and partnership in this important initiative.  With the majority endorsement by students, the University will now seek approval from the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents in February 2024. If approved by the Board, the Student Health Fee will increase by a flat $24.35 per long semester beginning Fall 2024,” Dr. Arenaz explained.

Among other things, the Board’s approval will allow TAMIU to introduce more mental health counseling staff and services for students. This is particularly important as the American Psychological Association reports that during the 2020-2021 school year, more than 60 percent of college students across the nation satisfied the criteria for having at least one mental health issue for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Arenaz noted that momentum for the Referendum’s passage was buoyed by advance support from students.

“The Referendum was unanimously recommended by the TAMIU Student Fee Advisory Committee which is made up of five TAMIU students and four TAMIU employees,” Arenaz said.

Before online voting from November 28 – 30, four information sessions were offered, including in-person sessions and an online session.
