If it’s October, it’s time for Maroon Madness at Texas A&M International University, the campus's cherished traditional launch of the basketball season at TAMIU.

This year’s event, free and open to the public, was held Tuesday, Oct. 21.  It began with  Pre-Madness  outside the Kinesiology Convocation Building (KCB) at 5:30 p.m.   Food was provided by Aramark and activities were hosted by TAMIU student organizations and Dustdevil Athletics teams while DJ Cynthia provided Pre-Madness sounds.

The KCB doors opened for full-on Maroon Madness at 7:30 p.m. and the first 1300 guests will receive free T-shirts and tickets for prize opportunities. Emcee Ivan Lopez kept the crowd pumped.

Athletic Director Griz Zimmermann said the popular event is always a crowd-pleaser and a great way to catch up on or get inspired by the Dustdevil Nation.

“Maroon Madness is a signature event at TAMIU planned with and for our students and community. Each year it seems we have more excitement and features.  It serves to initiate the season and let our fans know the high quality of our student-athletes and their coaches as they ready for Lone Star Conference action.  We appreciate all the help and support we get from our fans and enjoy presenting this annual Fall showcase of Dustdevil Athletics. We’re especially excited to welcome our alumni members, including former Dustdevil student-athletes, as well as the Laredo community,” he said.

He explained that this year’s Maroon Madness took its inspiration from the popular Netflix television series “Stranger Things” -- which brought an additional fun twist to planned activities and perhaps influence the evening’s clothing.

Once inside at 7:30 p.m., participants could meet TAMIU Dustdevil Men’s and Women’s Basketball team members, watch a series of fun competitions and games between the student-athletes, enjoy a contest between coaches, and a game of determining quickest reflexes between team members and students.

Also offered was a “Stranger Things” take on the game of red light-green light, and a drawing for prizes including Beats Headphones, Nintendo Switch, a scooter, a theater-quality sound bar…and a culminating  free tuition contest.

Event sponsors were Housing & Residence Life, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, and 550 Pizzeria.
