Winners Named at TAMIU Esports First-Ever Invitational for High School Students

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Rec Sports hosted its first-ever gaming tournament Saturday, April 18, 2026.
Esports high school teams from both Laredo ISD and United ISD schools were invited to compete for the top spots, both as teams and in the 1v1 bracket.
Participating schools included United High School, J.B. Alexander High School, Lyndon B. Johnson High School, United South High School, Raymond & Tirza Martin High School, J.W. Nixon High School, the Vidal M. Treviño School of Communications and Fine Arts, Dr. Leo G. Cigarroa High School, and Hector J. García Early College High School.
A total of 45 Esports athletes competed, with the invitational results as follows:

1st - United High School
2nd - Alexander High School
3rd - Cigarroa High School
Solo Tournament Winners
1st - Eduardo Aguirre (UHS)
2nd - Avery Gerard (AHS)
3rd - Diego Camarillo (UHS)
The invitational was an opportunity for students to compete and showcase their skills, affirmed Robert Garza, the University’s Rec Sports director.
“The TAMIU Esports Invitational served as a platform for students to collaborate with their peers and represent their schools with pride in an environment that values both competition and personal development,” said Garza.
Hosted by the University’s Esports Program, student-athletes will be on hand for casting the event and running the tournament brackets. The University’s Esports Program has made significant strides within collegiate gaming, including finishing in the Top 8 at the 2025 Grand Finals LAN Tournament for the National Association of College Esports and finishing fourth in the nation during the Call of Duty: Vanguard Starleague National tournament.
