Program Description (en español)


About our program
In the Master of Arts (MA) in Spanish offered by the Department of Language and Literature you will have the opportunity of studying applied Hispanic linguistics and the culture and literature of Spain and Spanish America.

The MA in Spanish program provides a deep knowledge of those three areas as well as an approach to the literary theory and an experience in literary research.  With this preparation you will be able either teaching at middle, high schools, and community colleges, or continuing graduate studies beyond the MA degree and to develop a professional life teaching at universitites, beside those that correspond to the wide needs of a multi cultural nation that has the Spanish language as the most important in terms of population and culture.

Admission Requirements
For your admission to the MA in Spanish program you should follow the regular procedure indicated by the Office of Graduate Studies & Research of the university.  Also, you should take a special exam administered by the Department of Language and LIterature in which you will demonstrate your adequate abilities of reading comprehention in English and your writing proficiency in Spanish.

If you have another degree in another discipline different of Spanish, you must take the courses needed at the undergraduate level.  The Spanish Graduate Advisor will give you the more appropriate recommendations regarding this issue.

Degree requirements
You have to complete 36 semester hours in non-thesis option or 30 in thesis option.  During the first year of study you will decide which option suits your needs.  To make the best decision, you should talk about it with your professors and the Spanish Graduate Advisor.

Up to six (6) hours of graduate level study with a minimum grade of 3.0 ("B") on a 4.0 scale may be transferred, with the consent of the Department Chair, from other accredited institutions of higher education.

A minimum grade point average of 3.0 ("B") on a 4.0 average scale computed on all graduate work attempted must be maintained.  No more than six (6) semester credit hours with a letter grade of "C" earned at Texas A&M International University will be accepted as credit for this program.

You must complete all the requirements for graduation in not more than four years after you started the MA Spanish Program.

At the conclusion of the all required coursework you will take a written comprehensive exam. This exam will consist of material drawn from Linguistics, and Spanish Peninsular and Spanish American culture and literature.  If it is necessary, you  may be called for an oral exam to help clarify any ambiguities found in the written exam.  If you do not pass an area, you will need to retake the entire comprehensive exam the following semester.

You have three opportunities to take and pass the comprehensive exam.  Therefore, it is highly recommended that you are well-prepared.  You should start preparing your comprehensive exam at least during the three or four months prior of the exam date.  A month before the exam date you should have a meeting with all of your professors to obtain guidelines and the best recommendations to finish the preparation of your exam.

Prior to taking your comprehensive exam, you should demonstrate a reading knowledge of a second Romance language.  You can complete this requirement either completing at least six hours of course work with a grade of "B" or highter in one Romance language different of Spanish or by passing a departmental reading exam in a second Romance Language.

If you have choses the thesis option, before registering for the Thesis-SCH you should approve your comprehensive exam and present a thesis proposal.

Usually you will take the MA in Spanish comprehensive exam by early April (Spring semester) and by early November (Fall semester).  In this regard and for more details you should be in touch with the Testing Center.

MAESTRIA EN ESPAÑOL

Los estudiantes que ingresen al programa de la maestría de español ofrecida por el Departamento de lenguas y literatura tendrán la oportunidad de estudiar lingüística hispánica aplicada y la cultura y literature de España e Hispanoamérica.

El programa de maestría provee un conocimiento profundo de aquellas tres área, como también una aproximación a la teoría y la investigación literarias.  Con esta preparación, el estudiante después podrá o enseñar en instituciones de educación secundaria y superior, o continuar sus estudios hacia el doctorado y desarrollar un avida profesional en la enseñanza universitaria.  Otros campos de desempeño profesional corresponden a los que ofrecen las amplias necesidades de una sociedad multi cultural como lo es la estadounidense, la que tiene el español entre sus más importantes idiomas y culturas.

Requisitos de admisión

Para su admisión en el programa de maestría en español usted deberá seguir el proceso indicado por la Oficina de Estudios Graduados.  También, usted deberá tomar un examen especial administrado por el Departamento de Idioma y Literatura, en el que podrá demostrar sus habilidades de compresión de lectura en inglés y su aptitud de escritura en español.

Con el propósito de que la persona admitida logre un buen desempeño en el programa de español, quien tenga una licenciatura en ora disciplina deberá tomar uno o más cursos de español del programa de pregrado.  El Consejero de Estudios graduados de español proveerá las recomendaciones y/o sugerencias necesarias.

Requisitos del programa

Los estudiantes deben completar treinta y seis (36) horas crédito en su plan de estudios sin tesis, o treinta (30) en su plan de estudios con tesis.  Durante su primer año de estudios, usted decidirá cuál de las opciones satisfará sus metas.  En procura de hacer la mejor decisión, usted deberá consultar con sus profesores y el Consejero de Estudios graduados de español.

Usted puede transferir hasta seis (6) horas crédito de estudios graduados con una calificación mínima de 3.0 ("B") en una escala de 4.0, de otras instituciones acreditadas de educación superior.  Lo anterior requiere del consentimiento del jefe del Departamento de Lenguas y Literatura.

Usted debe mantener por lo menos un promedio general de calificaciones (GPA, por sus siglas en inglés) de 3.0 ("B") en una escala promedia de 4.0, en todos sus cursos.  En el programa no se aceptan más de seis (6) horas crédito con una nota de "C" en cursos tomados en Texas A&M International University.

Usted debe completar todos los requisitios para graduarse en no más de cuatro (4) años luego de haber comenzado su programa de maestría en español.

Al finalizar todos los cursos del programa usted deberá tomar un examen general escrito.  El examen consistirá de preguntas sobre linguística y cultura y literatura peninsular e hispanoamericana.  Si es necesario, usted deberá tomar un examen oral con el fin de aclarar las posibles ambigüedades encontradas en su examen general.  Si usted no pasa alguna de las áreas en que se examinó, deberá re-tomar todo el examen general en el semestre siguiente.

Ussted tiene hasta tres oportunidades para tomar y pasar su examen general.  Por lo anterior se le recomienda de manera especial que lo prepare muy bien.  Debe empezar a preparar su examen general por lo menos durante los tres o cuatro meses previos a la fecha en que va a tomarlo.  Un mes antes usted deberá tener una reunión con sus profesores para que le proporcionen guías de estudio y las mejores recomendaciones para terminar de preparar el examen.

Antes de tomar su examen general, usted debe demostrar capacidad de lectura en un segundo idioma romance.  Puede cumplir con este requerimiento bien sea porque haya completado al menos seis (6) horas crédito en un idioma romance diferente del español con una calificación mínima de "B" o porque toma un examen de lectura en un segundo idioma romance.

Si ha escogido el plan de estudios con tesis, antes de tomar las horas crédito asignadas para este propósito usted deberá aprobar sus exámenes generales del programa y presentar una propuesta de su tesis.

Usualmente usted deberá tomar el examen general a principios de abril (para el semestre de primavera) o a principios de noviembre (para el semestre de otoño).  Al respecto, y para obtener maores detalles, usted deberá comunicarse con el Centro de Pruebas.
