Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students, faculty, and staff gathered for a day of service benefiting their local community as part of Make a Difference Day, held Saturday, Oct. 22.

Some 425+ TAMIU volunteers took part in the event, planting a total of 174 trees. Volunteers were awarded some 17,500 service hours for their work. Volunteers focused on tree planting and beautification at North Central Park during this year’s service-oriented event.

Organized through TAMIU’s Student Government Association’s LOVE Committee and the Office of Student Conduct and Community Engagement, these initiatives also encourage students to explore ways to leave a lasting impact on their community.

The event depends on the support of community organizations, including the Laredo Rotary, Keep Laredo Beautiful and the City of Laredo.

Now in its 13th year, the University’s Make a Difference Day has established itself as a long-standing tradition aimed at harnessing the collective efforts of the campus community to spearhead a community-wide improvement initiative.

Since 2010, University volunteers have worked on various community-wide projects benefiting groups such as Habitat for Humanity, Volunteers Serving the Need, the Laredo Animal Care Facility, the Azteca Neighborhood, the Ruthe B. Cowl Rehabilitation Center, and many more.
