TAMIU Celebrates Newly Named Kate Marmion Counseling Center

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) celebrated a special sign unveiling recognizing the newly named Kate Marmion Counseling Center during ceremonies held Thursday, March 5, 2026, at the Student Center.
The Kate Marmion Counseling Center is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation’s $2 million gift, which will support the ongoing efforts of the TAMIU Office of Student Counseling Services (SCS). Formerly known as the TAMIU Student Counseling Center, the renamed facilities commemorate the contributions of the Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation to the University.
The additional funding will help support student mental health and wellbeing, explained Rosabel Ramos, the University’s Office of Student Counseling Services director.
“We are very excited about the opportunities this gift creates and look forward to expanding the support we provide to our students. Currently, we are considering possible initiatives, such as a continuation of our psychiatric partnership and additional key roles, such as outreach coordinators, case managers, and peer mentors, depending on available funding and the center's needs,” said Ramos.
The University’s SCS aims to offer a safe and supportive environment that empowers students to overcome challenges, while also instilling a spirit of self-reliance and a drive for personal growth. Currently, the SCS counts of the support of nine licensed counselors offering a variety of services such as individual and couples counseling, group sessions, consultations, crisis support, and more.
During the 2024 – 2025 academic year, over 2,000 appointments were scheduled with a licensed counselor. Counseling services at the University are available to all currently enrolled students at no additional cost as they are covered through the student health fees.
The University also offers Umatter, a TELUS Health Student Support app that offers additional, immediate mental health assistance.
Enrolled students can talk with a professional counselor through a confidential, real-time virtual counseling service available 24/7 via chat or phone. The app is available for Apple iOS, Android and through a web browser.
