Bernice Y. Sanchez

Dr. Bernice Yvonne Sanchez currently serves as Interim Associate Dean for the College of Arts & Sciences, the largest College at TAMIU. Her areas of expertise and research focus include Curriculum Development, Critical Reading and Writing Instruction, Teaching Literature, Teacher Preparation, and Effective Professional Development & Professional Learning.

Dr. Sanchez was born and raised in Laredo, attended Nixon HS and graduated 1991. Dr. Sanchez is a Mental Health & Wellness Teacher, certified 500-hour National Yoga Alliance Yoga teacher. She earned her BA in English and Interdisciplinary Studies with Teacher Certification and her MA in English Literature from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, TX. She went on to earn her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Reading and Language Arts from Texas A & M University in College Station, TX. Dr. Sanchez has a total combined 31+ years of service in education. Her career spanned from being a classroom teacher and instructional specialist leader for 10 years at the elementary and middle school levels and has served as a university professor and administrator for 21+ years. She has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of Reading/Literacy and Language Arts, Curriculum and Instruction, English Literature and Writing. She served as the site Director for the South Texas Writing Project, an affiliate of the National Writing Project and secured over $500,000.000 in grant funding between 2009-2016 for Laredo educators. Dr. Sanchez published her first book (2019) Transforming Secondary Schools: Professional Learning Communities, Sentia Publishing Company. In addition, she has published numerous articles in scholarly research journals and has presented her research at various conferences over the last 20 years.
