This year’s annual Welcome Week festivities cap off with an exciting fireworks display, dubbed “Dusty’s Lights Fireworks Extravaganza,” that’s happening Friday, Aug. 27 at 9 p.m.

The first-ever, on-campus fireworks display is open to currently enrolled students and members of the University community, including faculty and staff.

Attendees can watch the fireworks display from parking lots outside the Academic Innovation Center, the Senator Judith Zaffirini Student Success Center and the parking lot next to the Residential Learning Center.

Individuals should remain in their vehicles and tune into 88.5 FM, as the show will be synchronized to music, including the University’s alma mater and a broadcast welcome by University President Dr. Pablo Arenaz.

Dr. Arenaz said the initiative is a bold way to welcome students back to campus.

“It’s a great way to kick off the Fall 2021 semester and culminates our Welcome Week activities here. With students back on campus as part of our full, vibrant Fall experience, they’ve navigated their way to classes, meeting their faculty and fellow students -- and will be getting to safely know our 300-acre campus.

“We wanted to further heighten that exploration of our academic and co-curricular offerings with a new event that makes our welcome safe, shared and visible. My hope is that in seeing that welcome fill the sky, it will also fill students with the hope of a brighter future that we will share together,” he explained.

The fireworks display is sponsored through the TAMIU Alumni Association and the Division of Student Success.

Welcome Week is an annual week-long program of activities aimed at helping students transition to University life. Organized through the Office of Student Orientation, Leadership and Engagement, TAMIU’s annual Welcome Week activities were held Monday, Aug. 23 – Friday, Aug. 27. All events were free and open to currently enrolled students.
