Faculty Mentorship

Welcome to TAMIU’s Faculty Mentoring Program. Effective faculty mentoring plays a crucial role in advancing both early career and senior faculty through dedicated support in teaching, research, and engagement. The PROF Center is committed to creating an academic environment that emphasizes collaboration and engagement, helping faculty members feel valued and connected to our community.

In our commitment to support new faculty, we launched the Peer Mentoring Circles as an integral component of our new faculty mentorship program.

Four Principles

  1. Mentorship is a collaborative process drawing upon the knowledge of senior faculty who can provide guidance.
  2. Mentorship should aim to help junior faculty acquire the key elements and professional relationships at TAMIU and beyond that are necessary to develop academic advancement.
  3. Mentorship will involve the traditional dyadic relationship and will also be enhanced by providing additional professional development at the institutional level.
  4. Mentorship is an ongoing relationship and as such, mentoring will evolve over time and will shift to depending on professional milestones and the career stage of junior faculty.

Goals

  • Foster meaningful connections among new faculty and develop a cohort experience,
  • Create opportunities to engage with experienced faculty across TAMIU, and
  • Provide a collaborative forum for discussing teaching, research, and service expectations, learn about university resources, and develop professional networks extending beyond their departments and colleges.

Meet Ups

The PROF Center will host 4 total meetings with first-year faculty. There will be 2 held in the Fall semester and 2 held in the Spring. All meetings will take place during the TAMIU Common Hour from 3:30 - 4:30 PM.

For each meeting, an email announcement is sent providing the meeting details and registration. Registration is required.

Each meeting will offer a different activity or opportunity to network, discuss successes and challenges, and inquire more about specific processes at TAMIU that affect faculty.

Please reach out to the PROF Center Director, Dr. Cynthia Sosa, for any questions or concerns.
