Teacher certification in Grades 4-8 is available in the following specialization areas: English Language Arts and Reading, Composite Social Studies, or English Language Arts and Reading/Social Studies. Teacher certification in Grades 8-12 is offered in the following areas: English Language Arts and Reading, History, Social Studies, and Spanish.
Students interested in earning a degree with Teacher Certification must declare their intention to do so in the Registrar's Office by completing the required paperwork. Degree plans leading to Teacher Certification may be obtained in the Registrar's Office or in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Students may contact the Certification Office for information about requirements for Teacher Certification. Additional information is included in the introduction section of the College of Education in this catalog.

LANGUAGE CERTIFICATION in spanish
Students wishing to enhance career and personal opportunities are encouraged to develop and refine their reading, writing, and speaking skills in Spanish. As a means of officially recognizing high levels of proficiency in the Spanish language for non-Spanish majors or Spanish minors, the University awards a special notation of "Language Certification in Spanish" on transcripts of those undergraduate or graduate students in any major who complete the following Spanish courses with an overall 3.00 grade point average

  Spanish 2320   Grammar and Composition
  Spanish 3317   Spanish Linguistics

Spanish 4390   Spanish for Professional Purposes

Students who complete these courses with the requisite grade point average must request of the registrar that "Language Certification in Spanish" be noted on their transcripts.

Bachelor of Social Work
The mission of the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program is to prepare students for entry-level social work generalist practice. The program is open to qualified students who have a liberal arts background and who are committed to promoting the well being of all people and to pursuing economic and social justice. Social and economic justice is the special focus of the program. The effects of injustice and oppression for people living along the border of Texas and Mexico are emphasized throughout the curriculum.

Generalist social work practice consists of the use of a common body of knowledge and a common skill base linked by a common set of values that is used in all fields of practice, transcends method of practice, and is applied on the macro, mezzo and micro level of practice.

Completion of the Bachelor of Social Work degree does not constitute or guarantee licensure. Students interested in acquiring the appropriate level of State License after graduation must contact the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners.

The Social Work program is currently in candidacy status and making steady progress toward seeking accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education.

Requirements for Admission to the Bachelor of Social Work Program
The Social Work Program at Texas A&M International University in Laredo maintains two classifications of undergraduate students enrolled in its program: pre-social work majors and social work majors. Any student who is admitted to the University with a minimum grade point average of 2.0 and is in good standing with the University may enroll in or transfer into the Social Work Program as a pre-social work major. It is recommended that students attending other colleges or universities who plan to receive a BSW degree from Texas A&M International University transfer the second semester of the sophomore year. This will give students one semester of transition, the ability to complete SOCW 2361, an opportunity to become acquainted with the faculty of the Program and to let the Program know of any special needs prior to applying for admission to the pre-social work major. All pre-social work and social work majors are considered social work students and are under the auspices of the Social Work Program.

Admission to the Pre-Social Work Major
Admission to the Social Work Major is a two-tiered process, beginning with admission to the Pre-Social Work Major. In addition to meeting the University's admission requirements, prior to admission to the pre-social work major (pre-minor), students seeking a degree in Social Work must:
1. Submit an application packet petitioning for admission to the pre-major containing:
A personal statement describing reason for the student's interest in the profession.
A discussion of the personal qualities that indicate that social work will be an appropriate choice of profession.
An official transcript indicating a GPA of at least 2.0.
Three sealed letters of reference from sources such as work supervisors, former instructors, or supervisors of volunteer work.
A criminal background check report obtained from the police department.
2. Complete an interview with the Social Work Program Director. After a successful interview with the Social Work Program Director, the student is sent a letter of admission to the pre-social work major and may then take the first even course in the professional social work curriculum.

Admission to the Social Work Major
The student must submit a formal request to be admitted to the major. Upon completion of the first seven courses in the professional social work curriculum (SOCW 2361, 3301, 3302, 3303, 3304, 3305 AND 3306), a student may apply to become a social work major.

In order to be admitted into the major, the student must:
1. Have completed at least 45 semester hours of college coursework.
2. Have completed at least 30 hours of liberal arts work as specified in the degree plan.
3. Have either a minimum overall university grade point average of 2.0 or a minimum grade point average over 2.5 on courses transferred from another institution of higher learning.
4. Have a minimum 2.5 grade point average in each of the social work prerequisite courses with a minimum grade of C (2.0) in each: SOCW 2361, 3301, 3302, 3303, 3304, 3305 , 3306.
5. Demonstrate qualities of emotional and professional preparedness for work with clients. These include but are not limited to: communication skills (oral and written), interpersonal skills, cognitive and physical skills; emotional and mental stability (stress management, emotional and mental capacity); professional performance skills (commitment, behavior, self awareness, ethical conduct).
6. Have completed an application for admission to the social work major using the forms available in the Social Work Program Office.
7. Have submitted the following to the Director of the Undergraduate Program by the deadline in the BSW Handbook.

a. A completed application for admission to the Professional Curriculum.
b. A completed personal statement following the Program guidelines.
c. At least two recommendations from social service agency supervisors knowledgeable about the student's performance in the required SOCW 2361 and SOCW 3301 volunteer experiences. (The student must present two different experiences that total at least 85 hours of direct client contact). If SOCW 2361 or equivalent was transferred into the program from another institution, at least two completed recommendation forms from professionals in the field and documentation showing successful completion of at least 45 hours of supervised volunteer experience involving direct contact with clients in a human services organization are required.
d. Official transcripts from all colleges if not already in the student's file.
e. Score reports for any credit earned by examination.
8. Complete an interview with Program Director and Faculty of the BSW Program.
Acceptance of the applicant into the major is contingent on both academic performance and commitment to suitability for general social work practice. The decision of the program faculty is final, subject to appropriate review procedures as outlined in the University Student Handbook.

PRE-LAW STUDENTS
To be eligible for admission to law school the student must have completed a baccalaureate degree. In addition, each applicant to law school must take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). This test is usually taken during October of the senior year. While law schools consider a variety of factors, the LSAT score and undergraduate performance are generally given the most weight in determining which applicants will be admitted to a given law school.

The first two years of study for pre-law students are similar to the core curriculum courses taken by all students at Texas A&M International University. The final two years will be used to fulfill the remaining requirements of an undergraduate degree.

Law schools do not require that students select any particular major or sequence of courses as undergraduates. However, according to the Association of American Law Schools, a prelegal education should emphasize oral and written communication skills, a critical understanding of social institutions, and analytical thinking. Therefore, with regard to the selection of appropriate electives, pre-law students should seek the advice of a pre-law advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The following courses are some of those recommended as electives for the pre-law student: COMM 4323, PSCI 4311, PSCI 4312, PSCI 4326 or CRIJ 1306, CRIJ 1301, ACC 2301, BA 3310, HIST 3310, HIST 3350 and any 3000-4000 level English course.

In addition to helping pre-law students with the selection of course electives, the pre-law advisor can assist students in obtaining information about particular law schools, LSAT preparation, and the activities of the pre-law student organization.

Pre-Medical and pre-Dental Program

Students seeking to qualify for entrance to professional schools in medicine or dentistry are encouraged to meet regularly with an assigned pre-health career advisor in the College of Science and Technology. Pre-Medical and Pre-Dental advisors can tailor individual degree plans to meet the specific entrance requirements for each discipline and professional school.

The vast majority of students entering medical or dental school must complete four-years of college work. The curriculum offered by the College of Science and Technology provides a solid foundation in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. However, a student does not have to major in biology or chemistry to meet medical and dental school prerequisites as long as the student successfully completes the following courses:

  GENERAL BIOLOGY I & II   8 SCH
  GENERAL CHEMISTRY I & II   8 SCH
  ORGANIC CHEMISTRY I & II   8 SCH
  UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE PHYSICS I & II   8 SCH
  CALCULUS I   4 SCH
  ENGLISH   6 SCH

Students are encouraged to discuss their application plans during their sophomore year, and to take Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), Dental Admission Test (DAT), or any of the appropriate professional entrance examinations, in April of their junior year.

DISCUSSION SECTION
In selected laboratory courses, under the course description segment, a discussion section may be indicated. This is in-class discussion in lieu of a formal laboratory.

BACHELOR OF APPLIED ARTS AND SCIENCES

The Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) degree is an inverted degree program specifically designed to allow individuals who hold an Associate of Applied Arts and Sciences degree from an accredited institution with a major in a technical/vocational area the opportunity to obtain a baccalaureate degree without the significant loss of credits that normally occurs in pursuing a traditional degree. The degree is designed to afford academic depth to individuals who possess recognized competency in an occupational or technical field.

Thirty (30) hours of vocational/technical field courses will be used as part of the lower-level requirements at the freshman/sophomore level. In some instances individuals may be granted vocational/technical field credit for work experience. This is not intended as a teacher preparation degree.
