Comprehensive Internationalization at TAMIU

The American Council on Education (ACE) defines comprehensive internationalization as a strategic, coordinated framework that integrates policies, programs, initiatives, and people to make colleges and universities more globally oriented and internationally connected.

At Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), comprehensive internationalization is both a philosophy and a practice—a living framework that links our teaching, research, and engagement missions to the wider world. It is not a one-time achievement but an ongoing process of learning, reflection, and renewal that fosters sustainable, globally engaged practices and an organizational growth mindset.

This approach recognizes that all members of the TAMIU community—students, faculty, and staff—are learners and partners in transforming our institution from a regional anchor institution into The International U of the A&M System. Through intentional, data-driven action, comprehensive internationalization advances TAMIU’s mission is to provide affordable, accessible, and exceptional opportunities to prepare community members to contribute meaningfully to a global society while creating lasting impact in their local communities.

At TAMIU and throughout Laredo, global thinking and local impact are everyday realities—evident in our classrooms, partnerships, and community collaborations that connect South Texas to the world.

Internationalization at TAMIU is a coordinated, campus-wide effort that unites people, ideas, and partnerships across borders. Guided by the Standards of Professional Practice for International Education Leaders and Senior International Officers, our work emphasizes ethical leadership, collaboration, and continuous learning.

These standards ensure that internationalization advances innovation, affordability, and excellence in every dimension of university life—linking global vision with local action. Through this framework, TAMIU demonstrates how higher education can create global learning experiences that prepare individuals and communities to engage globally and impact locally—a principle lived daily at TAMIU and throughout Laredo.

TAMIU’s global initiatives are guided by the Standards of Professional Practice for International Education Leaders and Senior International Officers, providing a professional foundation for advancing comprehensive internationalization.

These standards emphasize:

  • Internationalization Expertise – Understanding comprehensive internationalization as a process that shapes teaching, research, and engagement; promoting global learning across the curriculum and co-curriculum; and ensuring ethical, lawful, and evidence-based practice.
  • Leadership and Management – Providing vision and strategic direction, strengthening professional development, communicating progress, and sustaining affordable, accessible, and exceptional opportunities for all learners.
  • Advocacy – Engaging local communities, empowering students and faculty, and building cross-sector partnerships that extend the reach and impact of The International U.
  • Personal Effectiveness – Demonstrating intercultural empathy, ethical integrity, and entrepreneurial resourcefulness while contributing to and learning from global professional networks.
