Co-Curricular Initiative

In partnership with the Office of Student Orientation, Leadership, and Engagement (SOLE), LEARN is providing students the opportunity to reflect on their extra-curricular and co-curricular experiences.

Upon submission and review, graduating students are eligible to earn a TAMIU Diploma frame or a Walk of Fame Brick to commemorate their success on campus! 

How to participate: 

  1. Select 10 Trailblazer extra-curricular and/or co-curricular activities that you have participated in that have an EL designation.
  2. Write a 5-7 page reflection that demonstrates how these experiences contribute to your personal and professional growth. Full details below. 
  3. Submit your reflection by the deadline to ensure it can be reviewed.

Reflection Structure and Content

Your reflection should be 5-7 pages, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, with 1-inch margins. Include a title page and proper citations if you reference external sources.

Organize your reflection into the following sections, each section has possible questions to help you address the topic but you are welcome to add any additional details that you want to share regarding your experience:

Introduction (½–1 page)

  • Briefly describe the selected Experiential Learning (EL) extra- and/or co-curricular activities you participated in.
  • Explain why you chose to participate in these activities and what you hoped to gain from them.
    • What activities did you participate in?
    • Why did you choose these activities?
    • What were your initial expectations or goals?

Description of Activities (1–2 pages)

  • Detail the specific roles, responsibilities, and tasks you undertook.
  • Include the duration and frequency of your involvement.
  • Highlight any significant projects, events, or leadership positions.
    • What were your roles and responsibilities?
    • How often and for how long did you participate?
    • What significant projects, events, or leadership roles did you take on?
    • What impact did your involvement have on the organization or community?

Skills Developed & NACE Competencies (2–3 pages)  

  • Reflect on how your experiences helped you develop skills aligned with the NACE Career Readiness Competencies.
    • Address at least four competencies, which include: Career & Self-Development, Communication, Critical Thinking, Equity & Inclusion, Leadership, Professionalism, Teamwork, and Technology
  • For each competency:
    • Define the competency in your own words.
    • Provide specific examples from your experiences that demonstrate growth in this area.
    • Explain how these skills will benefit you in your future academic or professional endeavors. 
      • How would you define this competency in your own words?
      • What specific experiences helped you develop this skill?
      • What evidence shows your growth in this area?
      • How will this competency help you in your future academic or professional life?

Challenges & Lessons Learned (1 page)

  • Discuss any obstacles you encountered and how you overcame them.
  • Reflect on what these challenges taught you about yourself and your approach to problem-solving.
    • What obstacles did you face during these activities?
    • How did you overcome these challenges?
    • What did these experiences teach you about yourself?
    • How did they shape your approach to problem-solving or collaboration?

Application to Future Goals (1 page)

  • Explain how the skills and insights gained will influence your career path, academic goals, or personal development.
  • Identify areas for continued growth and strategies for improvement.
    • How will the skills and insights gained influence your career or academic goals?
    • Which competencies do you want to strengthen further?
    • What strategies will you use to continue developing these skills?

Formatting & Submission

  • Use APA style for citations and references (if applicable).
  • Submit your reflection as a Word document or PDF by April 13th.
