Developing a Research Question
Learn how to identify a research topic, narrow a broad idea into a focused and researchable question, and develop effective keywords that guide the research process.
Undergraduate research is a high-impact, experiential learning opportunity that benefits everyone involved. Whether you're a student looking to deepen your academic experience or a faculty member guiding the next generation of scholars, research opens the door to meaningful growth.
Students gain valuable skills in oral and written communication, critical thinking, and research methodology—skills that translate directly into academic and professional success. From research-based courses to student assistantships, these experiences help students apply knowledge in various settings.
Faculty play a vital role by mentoring student researchers and fostering a culture of inquiry and discovery. Faculty support helps students thrive while advancing the university’s mission of academic excellence.

In collaboration, the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library and LEARN present the Research Life Cycle Workshop Series for students interested in learning or improving their research skills.
Open to all majors, classifications, and level of research knowledge!
Learn how to identify a research topic, narrow a broad idea into a focused and researchable question, and develop effective keywords that guide the research process.
Learn how to navigate library databases and discovery tools to locate scholarly information. Explore effective search techniques, including keyword development, Boolean operators, subject headings, filters, and other database features to retrieve relevant academic sources.
Apply advanced search strategies to conduct a comprehensive literature search. Learn how to refine searches across multiple databases, identify fundamental and current research, track citations, document search strategies, and build a strong foundation for a literature review.
Learn to critically evaluate scholarly, popular, and AI-generated information using established evaluation frameworks. Assess sources for authority, credibility, accuracy, bias, relevance, and ethical use to determine their suitability for academic research.
Apply evaluation skills by developing annotated bibliographies and synthesizing evidence from scholarly and AI-assisted sources. Identify themes, compare findings, recognize research gaps, and integrate evidence into a coherent literature review or research argument.
Organize research findings using citation management tools and learn effective strategies for communicating research through papers, presentations, posters, and other scholarly formats.
LEARN hosts the second annual Undergraduate Research Week Celebration from April 19-25, 2027!
We proudly offer Student Research Assistant (SRA) positions so that students can support ongoing faculty research projects. View SRA profiles from previous semesters and application information below.
