All tests and records at our office are strictly confidential and protected by law and professional ethics. They are set apart from all other records at the university and are not released to any other person or agency within or outside the university without the client's written consent, except as described by law. In the rare event you or others are in real danger, police or medical staff may be contacted to keep you, your friends, and your family safe. All staff members subscribed to the ethical guidelines established by the Texas Board of Examiners of Psychologists and the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors. As a client, you will be informed of the legal limits of confidentiality.
There is no charge for counseling and consultation to registered students, as these costs are covered by student fees. However, if you are not taking summer session classes, but are registered for the fall semester and were registered for the spring semester, you may qualify to pay the summer bridge fee. After you arrive for your first scheduled appointment, you will check in at the front desk with our administrative assistant or student workers. You will be asked to log in to the client portal and fill out your required appointment forms.
In the first session, your counselor will ask questions about your concerns and the goals you would like to focus on. Together, you and your counselor will set up a plan to work on these goals. Throughout your counseling sessions, you will be focused on working towards your goals.
Students can receive a maximum of 8 traditional counseling sessions every fall and spring semester. During the summer semesters, students can receive 4 sessions per semester (Summer I and Summer II). Sessions occur once a week and typically last 45 minutes.
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is one specific type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It is a 12-session psychotherapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Not everyone qualifies for CPT. Interested students must complete a screening with a counselor to determine eligibility.
Consistency is a crucial aspect of counseling. Additionally, to ensure that all students have a chance to seek and receive services. Clients are able to miss one counseling session; if a second session is missed, their services will be closed. Clients whose services are closed due to attendance can sign up for services again to receive the remainder of their 8 sessions, but may experience a wait time if there is a current waitlist. Additionally, they may be placed with a different counselor based on availability.
