Students who receive a TAMIU Study Abroad Scholarship must complete service hours upon return. A hold will be placed on your account until these hours are completed and submitted through the Office of International Engagement (OIE). This hold will block transcript requests, course registration, and diploma pickup. Holds will not be waived after graduation if hours remain incomplete.
Ways to Earn Service Hours:
- 6 Hours – Submit to the Guadalupe & Lilia Martinez Photobook:
- 1 written testimonial
- At least 10 photos (5 must include program participants)
- 1 Hour – Social Media Post:
- 1 Hour - Submit a postcard from abroad addressed to the Office of International Engagement
- 6 Hours – Submit to the Guadalupe & Lilia Martinez Photobook:
- 1 written testimonial
- At least 10 photos (5 must include program participants)
- 1 Hour – Social Media Post:
- 1 Hour - Submit a postcard from abroad addressed to the Office of International Engagement
- 5 Hours – Instagram Takeover
- Student will submit videos taken thought out the day and will answer questions in regard to Study Abroad to be posted on our Instagram
- Up to 3 Hours – Create an Instagram Reel
- Use hashtags #REELDustdevils and #txamiuabroad and Tag OIE’s Instagram account
- Reels should be 30-45 seconds long

- Sample Topics
- Study Abroad Experience Interview- Interview other Study Abroad Students, ask questions like the culture immersion, challenges faced, and benefits of studying abroad
- Documenting Cultural Events or Festivals – Share if there are any local events, festivals, or international days while you are abroad
- Study Abroad Tips and Advice – Create a short and helpful video offering advice to future study abroad students in topics like; packing, cultural etiquette, budgeting, essential apps for travelers, adjusting to the culture, things to know before going, what you wish you knew before traveling.
- “A Day in the Life” – Bring the camera along as you explain what a day as a student traveling abroad looks like
- Language Videos – Share the language from the country that you are in by practicing words you find interesting or unique
- Recipe Video – Share what your favorite dish was while abroad and share the recipe for the dish
- Local “Inspiration” – Create a scenic video with footage of local parks, landmarks, or unique settings found during your study abroad trip can be done with voiceover, ASMR, or overlay text
- Hours Vary (determined by OIE):
- Participate in study abroad fairs or information booths
- Assist at International Experiences events
- Participating in Study Abroad Panels
- Volunteer at the Office of International Experiences (contact OIE for opportunities)
- Full Credit – Become an International Student Mentor. (fulfills all hour requirements, contact the OIE office for more information)
