Prospective Students
We welcome all students who are eager to go beyond the classroom at TAMIU! Read the application requirements below, we accept new TAMIU students as well as those who have already started their academic journey.
Program Overview
Each student is required to complete the following:
- Honors contracts – which are an opportunity to enhance course learning and explore research skills in selected courses. Through contracts, students develop critical thinking, writing, and other skills. Visit the Honors Contracts page to read additional information.
- New students (0-24 credits)
- Complete 8 courses with Honors contracts (24 SCH) and a Senior thesis or
- Complete 12 courses with Honors contracts (36 SCH) with no thesis
- Transfer students (24+ credits)*
- Complete 4 courses with Honors contracts (12 SCH) and a Senior thesis or
- Complete 7 courses with Honors contracts (21 SCH) with no thesis
- New students (0-24 credits)
- Maintain a TAMIU GPA of 3.25 every semester.
- Complete 30 hours of community service each academic year through TAMIU Office of Student Conduct and Community Engagement.
- Complete one (1) TAMIU Trailblazer learning dimension.
- Attend UHURP Orientation and meetings scheduled during the year.
- Submit their Financial Aid application each academic year (FAFSA, TASFA, Mexican Tuition Waiver).
Students must have at least 2 years of course work (4 long semesters, in order to participate).
Admission Qualifications
Any full-time (12 SCH per long semester) student attending TAMIU is eligible to apply for acceptance to UHURP at any time before junior year.
The basic requirements for admission to the program are as follows:
- Newly admitted TAMIU students with fewer than 12 SCH of college or university coursework, must meet one of the following:
- SAT Score – 1100 or higher ACT Score 24 or higher
- Graduate in the Top 20% of their high school class
- Cumulative high school GPA of 95 or higher
- If college credit course work has been completed, GPA of 3.5 or higher
- TAMIU students with 12 or more SCH of college or university coursework:
- Minimum institutional GPA of 3.25
- Must have at least four full-time long semesters of coursework left before graduation to complete program requirements
- Transfer students from community colleges or other universities:
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25
- Must have at least four full-time long semesters of coursework left before graduation to complete program requirements.
Application Process
- Complete Application, which is open from March to June. The application form asks:
- Information about your High school or college GPA.
- Three short-essay questions to get to know you.
- Academic Background Check will be processed after the application is completed.
- An interview will be scheduled for students who meet the program criteria between June-July.
- Admission decision will be shared before the start of August.
Students who apply must be accepted to TAMIU and have completed their Financial Aid application (FAFSA, TASFA, Mexican Tuition Waiver).
