Bachelor of Science in Public Health

Program Mission

The mission of the Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) program, which is rooted in the larger University mission, is to educate students from diverse disciplines and backgrounds in core public health knowledge areas so that they are equipped to help prevent disease and promote physical and mental health and social well-being through public health practice, leadership, and research.

Admission to BSPH: Admission into the university follows all university guidelines and processes and may be done online. Students will be admitted into the pre-public health program and will be fully admitted into the  program in their junior year; criteria to be considered for admission into the BSPH program include: [1] students must be fully admitted by TAMIU and must be declared a BSPH major, [2] completed the University Core Curriculum and all BSPH foundational coursework requirements, (3) meet the foreign language requirement, and [4] have a minimum cumulative 2.50 GPA (on a 0.0 - 4.0 scale).

  1. Completion of a criminal background check at student’s expense within 30 days of application and again prior to PHLT 4415/4416.
  2. Provide proof of CPR certification prior to PHLT 4415/4416 at student expense.
  3. The program requires that students have learning experiences with public/private agencies in the community. Prior to agency placement, based on the individual agency requirements and at student expense, students may be required to meet further agency requirements related to health requirements, background checks, and orientation.

BSPH Program Learning Outcomes (PLO's)

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH), students will be able to:

  • Explain the foundations, history, and organization of public health systems and the profession.
  • Apply interdisciplinary knowledge from the sciences, social sciences, and humanities to understand and address population health issues.
  • Use critical thinking, problem-solving, and basic research methods to identify and analyze public health challenges in diverse settings.
  • Demonstrate responsibility and ethical awareness in promoting health, advocating for populations, and collaborating with communities and organizations.
  • Communicate effectively using oral, written, and digital formats to inform, educate, and influence diverse audiences and stakeholders.
  • Apply foundational epidemiological principles to understand patterns of disease, prevention strategies, and health outcomes in populations.
  • Demonstrate systems thinking and foundational leadership skills in analyzing how organizations, policies, and environments impact public health.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLO's)

Upon completion of core Public Health coursework, students will be able to:

  • Describe the foundations, history, and structure of public health systems and practice.
  • Apply basic concepts from sciences, social sciences, and related disciplines to public health issues.
  • Identify and analyze public health problems using critical thinking and basic research skills.
  • Recognize the role of personal and social responsibility in promoting community health and collaboration.
  • Communicate public health information effectively in oral, written, and digital formats for diverse audiences.
  • Explain basic epidemiological concepts related to disease patterns, prevention, and control in populations.
  • Demonstrate introductory systems thinking by describing how organizations, policies, and environments influence public health outcomes.
